A little disappointing
With a 101+ key Apple keyboard with 19 function keys, and a tab key I won't be using when I am transcribing, I still have to use 2-key combos in order to set the shortcuts in this application. I'm not sure what's wrong with F1-F19? And why won't the application accept Tab? Very strange. I'd rather not have to contort my hands when I'm working, or have difficult-to-reach combos to control the action. Silly. If it doesn't take mouse inputs it should too. I'm just doing corrections, and may very well have a hand on the mouse, and if I had a mouse with auxillary buttons I could use them to start/stop the playback, etc.
However, that frustration aside, it's a good app at a good price.
Developer Response,
Hello,
thank you for your suggestion. In Transcriptions, a free objC-Library for text substitution is used: it features only key combos, thats why function keys are not supported (yet).
Kind regards
Very helpful, 2 suggestions/requests
This app works as advertised. The time stamps are very helpful. I would only have two suggestions. The first would be an easy way to remove or hide all of the timestamps at once - particularly when exporting. Also, I wish there were more options for exporting such as to a doc or pdf. (If there is already a way to do either of these things and I am just not seeing it, please let me know and I will amend my review.) Other than that, having the media file right next to the text screen does make the tedious task of transcription easier.
transcribing oral history
I’m using the program ( 2 hours now) to transcribe a a family history for a neighbor.
There was help to get me started, not a lot, but enough to get the keystrokes down. Maybe they should let us ludites know you have to combine control, option, command or shift with a letter or symbol.
It’s great. The money i’m going to save in felt tips, legal pads yadda yada. instead of a ton of notes on different pages i’ve got an organized file on my desktop four stars only because i’m new to the review thing

There are plenty of 'transcription applications' for the Mac but Transcriva remains in a class of its own. Whereas most transcription aids offer little more than a text editor with a media player attached (and perhaps a few satellite features), what sets Transcriva apart is that it is designed to maintain the structure of your transcript information.
Free Transcription Software
Transcriva recognizes and addresses the need to attribute a phrase to the person who spoke it. More importantly, however, for many students and professionals it's important to 'anchor' a spoken phrase or an annotation to a specific point in time. Consider closed captioning in the film and TV industry, research and video-documentation in the scientific industry, legal discovery in the legal industry, and so on. If you need to maintain this important information and find it quickly for later review, you are the specific user Bartas had in mind when building Transcriva.
Manual Transcription Software Mac Free
Of course Transcriva works equally well for basic transcription, but users should be mindful of the application's focus and are encouraged to look at the alternatives that are available for basic transcription needs. As always, Transcriva is free to download and try before purchasing with no pressure and no worries.
