Manual Mac Address

Once a VM is powered on for the first time, a new MAC address is generated for each virtual network adapter, and this MAC address will persist for the VM. Unless yo manually change it, or you manually move/copy the VM to another location and answer the question about whether you moved or copied the VM with 'I copied it'. Jul 20, 2016  Quick tip today on a static MAC address assignement, How to set a static MAC address in VMware Environment? Or rather what to look after when having alarms showing VM MAC conflict. MAC address “Spoofing” if you prefer, is well known. Sometimes you may need to “mess” with MAC address.

  1. Mar 14, 2014  Static MAC Address Table Entry. Posted on March 14, 2014; by Rene Molenaar; in CCIE Routing & Switching, CCNP SWITCH, Switching; Normally your switch will automatically learn MAC addresses and fill its MAC address table (CAM table) by looking at the source MAC address of incoming frames and flooding frames if it doesn’t know where to forward the frame.
  2. When your Mac is connected to a private network in a home or office, it's probably assigned what's known as a dynamic IP address. (To check, see How to Find Your Mac's IP Address.)That's not a problem for the majority of users - most people don't care whether their IP addresses changes or not.
Set manual mac address vmware

In most network deployments, generated MAC addresses are appropriate. However, you might need to set a static MAC address for a virtual network adapter.

The following examples show when you might set a static MAC address.

Virtual network adapters on different physical hosts share the same subnet and are assigned the same MAC address, causing a conflict.

You want to ensure that a virtual network adapter always has the same MAC address.

By default, VMware uses the Organizationally Unique Identifier (OUI) 00:50:56 for manually generated addresses, but all unique manually generated addresses are supported.

If you choose to use the VMware OUI, part of the range has been partitioned for use by vCenter Server , host physical NICs, virtual NICs, and future use.

You can set a static MAC address using the VMware OUI prefix by adding the following line to a virtual machine‘s configuration file:

In the example, <number> refers to the number of the Ethernet adapter, XX is a valid hexadecimal number between 00 and 3F, and YY and ZZ are valid hexadecimal numbers between 00 and FF. The value for XX cannot be greater than 3F to avoid conflict with MAC addresses that are generated by the VMware Workstation and VMware Server products. The maximum value for a manually generated MAC address is shown in the sample.

You must also set the address type in a virtual machine’s configuration file.

Because ESXi virtual machines do not support arbitrary MAC addresses, you must use the example format. Choose a unique value for XX:YY:ZZ among your hard-coded addresses to avoid conflicts between the automatically assigned MAC addresses and the manually assigned ones.

It is your responsibility to to ensure that no other non-VMware devices use addresses assigned to VMware components. For example, you might have physical servers in the same subnet, which use 11:11:11:11:11:11, 22:22:22:22:22:22 as static MAC addresses. Since the physical servers do not belong to the vCenter Server inventory, vCenter Server is not able to check for address collision.

OK, you got your Xbox One; maybe you waited at Best Buy all night to pick it up, but now you're back at your college dorm and you have a problem. In order to connect your Xbox One to the Internet, you must have the MAC address.

First thing's first. What is a MAC address?

You can have a MAC address even though the Xbox One is not an Apple product. MAC is short for media access control address and is the unique identifier to connect your device to the network. A lot of universities use them to make sure that you're actually a student on campus and to track you down if you commit an infraction on their network. Just something to keep in mind.

I know what a MAC address is. How do I get it?

OK, set up your Xbox One like you normally would, let the set up fail and then use the troubleshooter. It'll show you the MAC address.

What you're looking for will say 'Set Up Network.' Redditor Chicago31 explained it best here:

For anyone wondering, mess around with the setting up a network options. The menus are all similar but different, so fail a test and try to find anything about changing network settings or setting up a network. I went to set up a network, gave it a one character name, failed a test, and then the screen gave me my MAC address.

All of this will happen before the update (cause the update is coming from the Internet you cannot connect to.

Still not working...Now what?

Unfortunately this has now fallen into the realm of your university's IT department. Some colleges and universities do things a bit differently and you may have to contact them so they can manually authorize your device.

Manual

This could be because your university is overly protective, or just doesn't recognize consoles out of the box. It could take a couple of days for the university to whitelist consoles.

Also, it is day 1, so keep that in mind. Servers are going to be super busy today, especially with the release update and people contacting for technical issues.
